What is a grid rank scan?

A grid rank scan is a map-based local ranking report that checks where your business appears in Google Maps results from dozens of individual points around your location - typically a 7×7 or 9×9 grid of pins spread across your service area - so you can see exactly where you win, where you fade, and where a competitor owns the map.

Google’s local results are proximity-weighted: the searcher’s physical location changes what they see. A customer three blocks from your shop gets a different map pack than a customer three miles away, even though both typed the identical search. A grid scan simulates a real search at every pin and records your true position at each one, producing a color-coded map instead of a single number.

At DP1 DESIGN we run grid scans through Local Falcon, the industry-standard platform for this, and we treat the resulting map as the ground truth for every piece of local SEO and Google Business Profile work we do.

Why your “average rank” lies to you

Most rank trackers report one number: “you rank #4 for roofer near me.” That number is a fiction - a blend of wildly different positions averaged into something nobody actually experiences. In practice it hides three expensive truths:

  • You dominate your own block and vanish elsewhere. Ranking #1 within a half mile and #17 across town averages to a respectable-looking number while most of your market never sees you.
  • The money neighborhoods may be your weakest pins. An average can look stable while you’re invisible precisely where your highest-value customers live and search.
  • Progress gets buried. Optimization that lifts you from #15 to #5 across half the grid barely moves an average - but it puts you on screens you were never on before.

Grid tracking replaces the fiction with geography. You stop asking “what’s my rank?” and start asking the question that matters: where do customers see me, and where don’t they?

Competitor tracking & share of local voice

Every pin in a grid scan also records who ranks above you at that spot. Over a full scan, that becomes a competitive map: which rival owns the north side, who is creeping into your neighborhood, and whose weak pins are yours for the taking.

The summary metric we watch is share of local voice (SoLV) - the percentage of grid points where your business appears in the local top three, since the three-pack is where nearly all map-driven calls and direction requests happen. SoLV turns a sprawling map into one honest KPI: if your share of local voice climbs from 22% to 60%, you are appearing in the map pack at nearly three times as many locations where real customers stand and search. We benchmark your SoLV against your top competitors every scan, so you always know whether the gap is opening or closing.

A client swore he ranked number one because he checked from his own desk. The grid showed red across half of Metairie. You can’t fix what you measure from one chair.

Visual before/after reporting

Grid maps are the rare SEO deliverable a business owner reads in five seconds. Green pins mean top-three; yellow means page-one visibility; red means invisible. When we begin an engagement we archive your baseline scan, and every monthly report puts the current map next to it.

Watching red turn to yellow and yellow turn to green - block by block, month over month - is the clearest proof of local SEO progress that exists. No jargon, no charts to interpret: either the map got greener or it didn’t. That accountability cuts both ways, and we prefer it that way. It’s the same show-your-work philosophy behind our free AI Visibility Audit.

How often should you scan?

Cadence depends on how contested your map is and how actively we’re working it:

  • Monthly - the baseline for every DP1 local SEO client; enough to trend SoLV and catch drift.
  • Biweekly or weekly - during active optimization pushes, after major Google Business Profile changes, or in cutthroat categories like legal, HVAC, and medical.
  • Event-triggered - immediately after a Google algorithm update, a competitor’s sudden move, or a suspected listing suspension, so we react on data instead of anecdotes.

How DP1 runs grid tracking

Grid data is only useful if it drives the work. Our loop is simple and relentless:

  1. Baseline scan We map your current rankings and SoLV for the keywords that actually produce calls, plus the same scans for your top three competitors.
  2. Diagnose the weak pins Red zones usually trace back to specific causes: profile category gaps, thin service pages, weak citations, or review deficits versus whoever owns that zone.
  3. Fix, then rescan Every optimization sprint ends with a fresh scan, so each change is tested against the map instead of assumed to work.
  4. Report the movement You get the before/after maps, SoLV trend, and competitor deltas in plain English - every month, with 25 years of local market judgment behind the recommendations.

Grid Rank Tracking - frequently asked questions

What is a grid rank scan?

A grid rank scan is a map-based ranking report that checks your Google Maps position from dozens of points spread across your service area, usually a grid of 49 or 81 pins. Because Google localizes results to the searcher's physical location, your rank changes block by block. The scan simulates a real search at every pin and plots the results as a color-coded map, showing exactly where customers see you and where they see a competitor instead.

Why is my Google ranking different in different parts of town?

Proximity is one of Google's strongest local ranking factors. When someone searches, Google weighs how close each business is to that searcher, alongside relevance and prominence. So a shop can rank first for searchers within a mile and slip to tenth for searchers across town, even on the identical keyword. That is why a single rank number is misleading, and why grid tracking measures your position at many locations at once.

What is share of local voice?

Share of local voice, or SoLV, is the percentage of points on a grid scan where your business appears in Google's local top three, the map pack that captures most calls and direction requests. If you show in the top three at 30 of 49 pins, your SoLV is about 61 percent. It is a single honest number that summarizes an entire map, and it is the primary KPI DP1 tracks and benchmarks against your competitors each month.

How often should I run grid scans?

Monthly is the practical baseline, and it is included for every DP1 local SEO client. We move to biweekly or weekly scans during active optimization pushes, after significant Google Business Profile changes, or in highly competitive categories like legal, medical, and home services. We also run event-triggered scans after Google algorithm updates or sudden competitor moves, so decisions are made on fresh map data rather than guesswork or anecdotes.

What tool does DP1 use for grid rank tracking?

DP1 DESIGN uses Local Falcon, the industry-standard grid scanning platform, to run all client scans. Local Falcon simulates real Google Maps searches at every pin on the grid, records your position and the competitors ranking above you, and calculates share of local voice over time. We layer our own analysis and 25 years of local market experience on top, turning the raw maps into a prioritized action plan for your listings, citations, and content.

Can grid tracking show my competitors' rankings too?

Yes. Every pin in a scan records the full local ranking at that spot, so we see exactly which competitor outranks you in each neighborhood. We also run dedicated scans on your top rivals, giving us their share of local voice and their weak zones. That intelligence shapes strategy: instead of vaguely trying to rank better everywhere, we target the specific areas and keywords where a competitor's grip on the map is weakest.
